90 DAYS AND BEYOND

Your role

Your role in welcoming new employees to Acme is critical. We use Workday to facilitate the onboarding process and help make your job easier. Follow the steps below to successfully onboard your employee.

Tip: You can view the progress of onboarding tasks for any current new hires on your team by running the Onboarding Status Summary report.

Before their first day
  • Complete the Onboarding Setup task in Workday. This task will automatically appear in your Inbox once the hire process is completed. Edit the Welcome message, specify People to Meet (up to 10), and select Helpful Contacts for your new hire. Your employee will see this information once they log in to Workday, along with the onboarding tasks assigned to them, which include completing forms, technology orientation, and compliance training.
  • Make sure their workspace is ready. First impressions matter, so be sure to confirm that equipment and work tools have been set up at their desk and the workspace is clean and neat. Contact our technology team if equipment has not been set up by the date specified in Workday or if you have questions.
Starting on their first day

In the first 30 days, you should:

  • Welcome new employees enthusiastically on their first day. Foster a sense of belonging and delight in their decision to join Acme. Try one of these ideas or come up with your own:
    • Welcome them with a cup of coffee or their favorite beverage.
    • Tie a helium balloon to their chair.
    • Go to lunch with them on their first day or during the first week.
    • Suggest that others include them in lunch on the first day or during first week.
    • Throughout the first week, take the time to introduce them to others — both those they will work with and those they might not. Being introduced to people over time can help prevent them from feeling overwhelmed on the first day.
    • Gather your team informally to share coffee or snacks together with the new colleague. Remote teams can meet over Zoom.
  • Give employees the big picture. Discuss What We Do, Who We Are, Our Culture, and How We Work with new employees.
  • Assign a buddy. Peers are invaluable in welcoming new colleagues and answering day-to-day questions. A good buddy is someone who:
    • Is in the same department as the new employee
    • Is a strong performer who has been with Acme for at least six months
    • Is patient and has good interpersonal skills
    • Wants to be a buddy!
  • Be available and involved. Meet with new colleagues regularly during the onboarding period. One-on-one meetings are essential to all successful manager/employee relationships. Learn more about building engagement.
